Special edition

What you’re about to read now is a special edition–the first sample published in English to give you a taste of our work.

Originally, we published Hikemates magazine locally for our members and readers in Slovakia and Czechia. But in the spring of 2024, we’ll bring you the first international version of our magazine in full length.

It may seem naïve to publish a print magazine in the age of the Internet and social networks. But some stories are too precious to disappear in the digital world.

The smell of paper. Beautiful photographs. Captivating tales. All this urges us to slow down, stop, and experience intensely. Something we so often forget in the endless rush of the 21st century. It is precisely the feeling of presence that we find in the mountains. With the help of Hikemates magazine, we can bring it to you wherever you are.

“As a person in the spotlight, I can still do something for the community” Reinhold Messner

Reinhold Messner

In an exclusive interview with Hikemates magazine, Reinhold talks about the biggest lesson he learned in the mountains and why he thinks humanity should become more modest if it wants to survive. He criticises the fact that climbing the highest peaks is now more for the rich than for mountaineers, adding that responsible tourism can actually help mountains.

We’re racing to save overselves

Joel Santos is a Portuguese photographer, documentary filmmaker and writer. His extraordinary images capture vanishing traditions and remote places. These include traditional fishermen in China, or Kazakh nomads and eagle hunters in Mongolia. "With my photos. I'm not that presumptuous. What I want is to lay a brick in the wall that is humanity." he says.
